Going to the Doctor?

Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science by Atul Gawande. This is an interesting collection of essays, and provided for a good discussion at our book group last night. It addresses things such as mistakes made by doctors and how it can happen, if pain is physical or psychological and if patients should be able to make their own decisions.

Summer in March

We just had a few days that felt like summer, but now it is back to cooler and wetter weather. (Though that cooler and wetter might feel like summer to Jenny.)

Washington DC and Baby Shower

Here is a quick preview of the trip we had from one end of the country to the other. Picture number one is at the sight of the battle of Bull Run. Picture number two is at Harper's Ferry where John Brown stormed the US armory (shot with the panoramic feature of our new camera). Picture three is at Fort McHenry where the Star Spangled Banner was penned. We went and saw Wicked in California, which was a just a whole lot of fun and great music. The final picture is from the shower. We have many more to post and will do so in the days to come.

Let's Play Doctor!

This past Saturday I participated in a Spay/Neuter clinic at MSU. We did about 80 animals in total. It was a long day which started at 6:30am and ended about 4pm. I was on my feet pretty much the whole time, but I did gain a ton of experience. I was amazed at the ability of the 4th year students. They were already handling abdominal surgery like pros. They say I will be that way as well, but I am really doubting that in my current state. My role during the surgeries was to be the anesthetist. Basically I monitored heart rate/sound, respirations, and anesthesia concentration. It was a great day of learning, but I was glad to get a sit down later on!
